Two commonly asked questions for periodontal specialists near you
Have a look at our most commonly asked questions and answers below in regards to periodontal therapy.
Q: What is the difference between a dentist and periodontist?
A: Periodontists periodontists for advanced cases of gum disease call periodontitis, which is out of the realm of treatment for a general dentist. A general dentist can treat gum disease through routine cleanings, scaling and root planning (deep cleanings), and antibiotic medications.
Q: What happens when I have periodontal therapy?
A: Periodontal therapy includes both surgical and non-surgical techniques to restore health to the tissues that support the teeth to make sure the tooth stays intact. First, scaling and root planning controls gum disease. Gum grafting is then used to make sure your gum has enough mass to prevent further damage. Afterwards, a series of surgeries are performed to remove diseased tissues and quarantine the region. A dental implant may be used to replace the tooth with a titanium tooth.
