Handy tips

Different types of lubricants

Many lubricants are engineered to achieve the best performance in order to reduce friction in machinery and keep them in good condition. Today, we’ll see how different types of lubricants are created and what purpose they serve.

  • Mineral oil-based lubricants are derived from crude oil. There are several types of base oils that differ in viscosity and formula. These are mainly used to lubricate machinery.
  • Synthetic oils are produced using synthetic hydrocarbons that are usually derived from petroleum. They are generally more expensive shell lubricants but offer higher performance as vehicle and automotive lubricants.
  • Solid lubricants such as PTFE, Metals/alloys and graphite can provide a non-stick surface for cooking or pistons. Graphite can retain lubricity to very high temperatures but may have problems with oxidation.
  • Organic lubricants are derived from vegetable oils and other organic sources.
