Handy tips

The difference between dry cleaners and laundry cleaning

When looking to get dirty clothes cleaned, its worth having an understanding of the various cleaning and laundry services, as well as the differences between them.

  • Dry cleaning services use chemical solvents as their cleaning process – i.e. it is ‘dry’ vs the typical water immersion of wet laundering methods.
  • While laundry cleaning and laundromats use cleaning agents like soaps, detergents and softeners, dry cleaning uses the chemical perchloroethylene.
  • After the chemical application, clothes in dry cleaning are loaded into a machine and washed in a process known as ‘tumbling’, and are then dried with dry cleaning machines. Meanwhile for laundry cleaning, water is removed from the garments via a spinning process (after which clothes are hung or tumbled dried).

Armed with these pointers, you will be better placed to make an informed decision about whether to clean your garments via a laundromat near you or with a dry cleaner. Keep searching through our listings for your nearest laundromat or dry cleaning service.
