In 2003 the Catholic Diocese of Townsville began discussing ways to support not just our own Catholic families, but family life in general. The Diocese felt it must respond to the changing needs of people in contemporary society in new ways, but always with the conviction that family life has a central place in the Church and in society.

Handy tips

Questions to ask when you are looking for preschools

A preschool or kindergarten allows children to acquire skills in areas such as communication, maths and problem solving early on, setting the foundation for their school and college experiences. Keep these questions in mind while exploring a kindergarten school near you:

  • Do they have adequate play activities? Physical activity not only promotes health and well-being but is also critical for the development of motor skills. Kindergarten should also expose children to fun tasks, such as stringing beads and snipping paper.
  • How do they handle discipline? Ask the teacher how he/she drives positive behaviour daily. For example, is there a reward chart in the classroom?
  • Is there naptime? Growing kids need to rest at some point during a busy preschool day so ask the teacher when naptime takes place. Ideally, naps should be scheduled at the same time every day and should not be more than two hours.
