Heating methods for hot water systems

One of the first questions you might ask when selecting a hot water system is “what type of heating method do I want to use?” You can choose between gas, solar, heat pump or electric heaters. Here’s some pointers on how each of these systems operate:

• Electric hot water system: An electrically heated storage tank. Although this type is the least expensive to buy and install, it’s the costliest to run and maintain if used on a day-to-day basis over peak periods.

• Solar hot water system: Solar energy is used to heat this hot water system where the energy collected from solar panels is used to heat water in a storage tank.Heat pump water system: This system is similar to an electric storage tank but it’s more efficient. It works similarly to the concept of a refrigerator but it pumps heat instead of coolant into the water.
