What is a hearing aid and how does it work?

Have a look at our quick introduction to the handy hearing aid. A hearing aid is a small device that is worn behind or in the ear. It has a lot of electronic components that amplify sounds so that these sounds can be heard more easily. Smaller, more discreet hearing aids are more expensive, and may be harder to operate. A hearing aid has three basic parts: a microphone, amplifier and speaker. The hearing aid receives sound from the microphone, amplifies the converted electrical signals and sends them to the ear through a speaker. Typically, a person with hearing loss can have his/her hearing enhanced but not fully restored, as it is assumed that the person at least has a capability to hear. There are two types of hearing aids: digital and analogue. Analogue aids convert sound waves into electrical signals. Digital hearing aids decode the sound waves into bits and bytes. This can be specially programmed to amplify some frequencies more than others. Think you need hearing aid equipment?
