The Dunes is a long, challenging public course on land that is typical rolling links land. It is my favourite course on the planet and I have played it at least 15 times. You can spray my ashes on the first tee. Every hole (except maybe the 8th and 9th) are memorable and involve beautiful strategic bunkers that seem like they are natural features. The Dunes can be a beast if the wind is blowing but generally the weather there tends to be better than you expect on the drive down the Peninsula. The seventeenth is just about the perfect par three and the first hole is a perfect blend of risk and reward. The greens are typically fast and in great condition. The short par 4 fourth has perplexed many with its oddly aligned green. After a lot of rain it stays dry because it is built on sand dunes so drains superbly. One thing I have reservations about is the six hole It is perplexing for many - sharp downhill par three with green that slopes towards the swamp at the back - often seems impossible to stop the ball - really just my lack of backspin ability. I think it was fairer when first opened maybe it has dried out a lot and hardened over the years.
