Handy tips

How cardboard boxes are made

Invented in 1871, cardboard boxes have been an integral part of our lives ever since. Despite its simplistic appearance, the manufacturing process for cardboard packing, storage and shipping boxes is actually quite nuanced. Here’s a quick breakdown of how cardboard boxes are made.

  • Machines first roll out a huge sheet of recycled paper that will form a wavy sheet of paper called the flute. The flute sits between the cardboard and is the key source of strength in the cardboard.
  • The paper goes through two rollers called corrogaters. Another roller then glues the sheets together using hot steam to form the flute.
  • A machine them glues two liners to hold the cardboard box together and strengthen the board.
  • The board is then cut into varying shapes and sizes.
  • Afterwards, these boards are fed into a trimmer at high volumes. The trimmer cuts through the cardboard precisely to make the flaps and handles.
  • Glue is then applied to join the two ends of the board. Small chunks of cardboard are recycled for further production.
