What is electroplating?

Electroplating is a process that is commonly used in industry to change the surface properties of a surface. Electroplating uses an electric current to form a thin metal coating on some metal surfaces. Electroplating is primarily used to change the surface properties of an object and can be categorised by the types of coatings:

  • A sacrificial coating is used for protecting a metal for abrasion and wear resistance, as well as corrosion protection.
  • An alloy coating is made by plating two metals. It is used to build up thickness on undersized parts or to form objects by electroforming.
  • Decorative coatings are used primarily to improve the visual appeal. Common metals used include copper, nickel and zinc.
