What to look for when buying security doors

There are lots of different types of doors out there, with different combinations of features. Unfortunately, most products that advertise ‘security screen doors’ may only keep you secure from mosquitos. The Australian Standard AS5039 certifies doors as secure after fulfilling stress testing. Here are some things to look for when buying security doors:

• Frame is made from steel or aluminium and reinforced at the corners.
• Infill made from steel, aluminium grille or stainless steel mesh.
• Grilles should be thick and welded or riveted to the frame. Look for rivets that aren’t too far apart.
• Door locks should be five-pin cylinder. Providers should offer more than 20 years warranty on the lock.
• Hinges should have fixed pins that cannot be removed.
• Commercial security doors should always be custom made, as installing them so that they meet the standard must be done with precision.
