Safety considerations when hiring cranes

Everyone has a work health and safety duty when it comes to operating cranes. We’ve collected some factors to consider when hiring and operating cranes.

  • Consider hiring experienced and qualified crane operators from crane services. Take them through the worksite to identify potential hazards.
  • Perform a full inspection of the crane according to model WHS regulations.
  • Check that a crane is suitable for the intended use. Make sure that you fully understand different lift capacities, especially in small and mini crane hires.
  • Crane companies should always provide an OHS and operating manual. Ensure you read and understand its contents before operating.
  • Manage risks by identifying hazards, assessing and controlling these risks.
  • Review these measures taken to reduce risk.
  • Check regulations in your state or territory for further advice on operating cranes.
