Handy tips

How reinforced concrete is made

Concrete is a very strong and versatile material, however, it has a key weakness- concrete is not resilient to tension and therefore cracks easily. Steel bars, which make up concrete steel and wire mesh, can counter tensile forces and maintain a solid concrete structure.

There are normally two ways of pouring concrete to create reinforced concrete slabs. The first involves setting up the concrete reinforcing mesh into the mould before pouring over the entire mould. This allows the concrete to bond closely with the metal and with each other, however, there may be small pockets of air left behind. This may be a source of cracks.

The other method involves pouring half the concrete into the mould and inserting the concrete mesh. After that, the rest of the concrete is poured. This method may be more effective, however, there is a risk that the two concrete halves will not be strongly bonded, which may also result in cracks if not done properly.

Reinforcing concrete with a mesh produces a material with high strength, high tensile toleration and fantastic durability. Browse through our directory and grab a solid quote today.
