What is a chain and what does it do?
A chain is a serial assembly of connected pieces, called links, typically made of metals such as steel. They are similar to rope in that it is flexible and curved in compression but linear, rigid, and load-bearing in tension. A chain may consist of two or more links. Chains can be classified by their design, which is determined by their use:
- Chains that are designed for lifting. When lifting chains are used with a hoist; they are able to pull relatively heavy loads.
- They can also be used to secure an object, such as with a bicycle lock. These locks have links that are torus shaped, which make the chain flexible in two dimensions.
- Small chains made of gold or silver can serve as jewellery. This is mostly aesthetic, as metal links are slow to wear and look clean and elegant.
- Roller chains are used to transfer power in machines. These have links designed to mesh with the teeth of the sprockets of the machine.
