Ings Engineering

I bought a second-hand Ings ride-on mower in 1993. It had cut the school oval for many years and is still going strong on its third Honda engine. I broke the cutter bar after too many rocks on my bush 3 acres, and a new one arrived a few days later. The blades last maybe 200 hours of heavy use, some kind of very durable steel. I mention this as background to the excellent engineering tradition of this family business. I'd guess my mower was made in the late 60s or so. It's amazing.

What is a chain and what does it do?

A chain is a serial assembly of connected pieces, called links, typically made of metals such as steel. They are similar to rope in that it is flexible and curved in compression but linear, rigid, and load-bearing in tension. A chain may consist of two or more links. Chains can be classified by their design, which is determined by their use:

  • Chains that are designed for lifting. When lifting chains are used with a hoist; they are able to pull relatively heavy loads.
  • They can also be used to secure an object, such as with a bicycle lock. These locks have links that are torus shaped, which make the chain flexible in two dimensions.
  • Small chains made of gold or silver can serve as jewellery. This is mostly aesthetic, as metal links are slow to wear and look clean and elegant.
  • Roller chains are used to transfer power in machines. These have links designed to mesh with the teeth of the sprockets of the machine.
