Handy tips

What’s the deal with disabled and pram parking?

You might have seen the distinctive pram and wheelchair symbols at your international airport or city car parks. Every state in Australia may have some version of disability and pram parking. For example, in Victoria, a statewide disability parking permit scheme ensures people with reduced mobility are able to park closer to the entrance.

Disability parking is a parking concession to help reduce the barriers for permit holders when parking at a car parking space. The state government issues disability permits for people who are deemed as less mobile.

Pram car parking spaces are usually not enforced by law and are provided by car park management as a courtesy to parents. Legally there is nothing to prevent a person without a pram, or infant, parking in a pram spot. It is at the management’s discretion how they choose to enforce parent parking rules. So while car park management could ask someone without a pram, or infant, to vacate a parent parking spot, it’s not enforceable by law.

We all have a part to play in keeping car parks fair and safe. Keep up the courtesy as you look for cheap car parking near you.
