What is a canvas and what are quality canvases used for?

Canvas is an extremely durable fabric used for a variety of purposes. Modern canvas is usually made of cotton or linen and classified by weight. Below you’ll find a list of the most common applications of this amazing material.

Canvas is the most popular support medium for oil painting. Canvas is typically stretched across a wooden frame and coated with a chemical to prevent oil from damaging the canvas fibres. Cheap canvas material is also more affordable than expensive wooden boards.
Specialist digital printers can create canvas prints or photo canvas. After printing, high-quality canvas prints are then wrapped around a stretcher and displayed.
Canvas can also be used for shelter. Waterproof canvas tarps are often used as shade sails to protect children in a playground from the sun and rain.
Other uses include sails, tents, marquees, backpacks and other products where sturdiness is desired.
