Factors to consider when selecting bearings
Bearings come in different shapes and sizes to take on a range of different applications. If you’re deciding between ceramic bearings, brass bushings, ball bearings, pillow block bearings or roller bearings, the following considerations will be useful for you.
- Consider the movement of the load. Is the movement linear or rotating? Standard configurations for bearings include cylindrical bearings for radial loads, flanged ones for light axial and radial loads and thrust washers for heavy axial loads.
- Also, consider the load for the bearing. High loads would require increased contact area and a high load capacity.
- Factor in the temperature the bearing operates at. Bearings with solid lubricants are more effective in this department versus those lubricated with oil or grease.
- Other important factors include durability, friction and speed of movement.
