What’s the difference between asphalt and bitumen paving?

The term bitumen is often mistakenly used interchangeably with asphalt, but they are different materials. Let’s take a closer look at the difference between asphalt and bitumen.

Bitumen is a black viscous liquid that is used for road surfacing. A road that is bitumen-sealed has a layer of bitumen sprayed, and then covered twice with an aggregate mixture to form a two-coat seal.

Asphalt is produced in a plant that heats, dries and mixes aggregate, sand and bitumen to create a composite mix. Asphalt paving services use asphalt paving machines to apply asphalt as a solid material. The result of adding gravel and sand to bitumen makes for a smoother and more durable road than bitumen sealed roads.
