Handy tips

7 essential art supplies for every artist

Bring out your artistic vision by having the right tools at your disposal. Here are seven primary art tool essentials that any artist will want before getting started:

  • Graphite pencils: drawing the subject before starting is necessary. Got for a few 2B, 6B and 4H pencils to get a good spectrum for shading.
  • Erasers: kneaded and white erasers will be needed to correct sketching mistakes. Kneaded erasers don’t leave traces behind and can be moulded to erase smaller areas.
  • Drawing paper: drawing preliminary sketches on inexpensive sketching pads can come in handy in painting.
  • Painting surface: depending on your medium, choose a painting surface for your final piece of art.
  • Palette: an inexpensive plastic palette will likely serve you best as they are easier to use and wash.
  • Brush: get one or two brushes of various types depending on your medium to ensure you paint with your desired detail.
  • Paint: you don’t need a large array of colours to paint a great painting. Find a basic set of primary colours and you can paint practically anything!

If you fancy trying your hand at painting and need vibrant colours to make beautiful artwork, have a look at our directory to find art supply stores near you. Request a quote for art supplies near you today!
