The new rules of engagement
Index
There’s not two ways about it – getting engaged has changed.
Until recently a man would propose to a woman and he’d always ask her parents first.
Everywhere is different. In ancient China, the proposal was handled by a third party. Arranged marriages are still very common in India, and in some cultures, engagement periods can be as long as ten years.
So what should be the approach of the modern couple? How do you handle the proposal? How do you choose the ring? We are here to help.
The Proposal
The marriage proposal has moved well beyond the usual man on bended knee scenario.
Proposals nowadays range from the very extravagant and public to the very intimate.
The understated class of casually slipping a ring on a beloved’s finger over a fancy restaurant meal still works, but why not do something more elaborate?
How about proposing during a tandem bungee jump or sky dive? Why not film an extravagant proposal and send it via Facebook?
The Ring of Truth
The ring is a long held tradition that has stuck.
While the ancient Egyptians first wore an engagement ring on their left hand, the giving of the engagement ring dates back to 15th century Europe.
Eternity rings are also shared between couples as they commit to each other for life, whether they follow through with a marriage ceremony or not.
It’s tradition for modern couples to choose a diamond ring together at a jewellery store, with the wedding ring chosen to complement the engagement ring. Need help finding the right ring? Read our handy guide.
