It may be a small area, but tile retailer Kate Lane says the kitchen is often the one part of the house where people are more adventurous with tiling. "People often seek something striking that will create a mood and add personality in the kitchen," she says.

"The splashback is often a real focal point – it’s also the area the cook will have to look at the most!" Mosaic kitchen wall tiles in stone and glass are popular offerings, with enormous choice available. For a neutral kitchen colour scheme, stone offers a natural earthy look with a lovely texture. Or if you prefer more colour, there is a range of tiles in beautiful blends. Rich oranges, reds and browns can be teamed for a warm look, or cooler blues and sea greens for soft, watery effects.

According to Kate, larger kitchen tiles are also a popular option. "Bigger-format tiles are relieving renovators’ concerns about concealing grout joints," she says. "The new series is 150 millimetres x 600 millimetres, a long rectangular shape that’s available in ceramic, glass or stone. It’s popular for splashbacks and the beautiful textures and colours are easy to maintain." Because tile grouting is porous and prone to discolouration, sealing is recommended. "Using a grout additive or epoxy grout will prevent grime build-up," Kate says. "Stone tiles should be entirely sealed, as they are porous." Once sealed, the tiles can be easily wiped clean.

Artistically, kitchen wall tiles offer a full palette of opportunity. Whether it’s long strips arranged for a mixed glass and pebble effect, subtle stone mosaics, or sparkle-infused glass tiles in brilliant colours, there’s a look to suit everyone. Different materials can be blended, too – even stainless steel. A single effectively placed tile or a simple frieze on your kitchen wall can give the room a new and different focus. But before you get carried away, do take the cabinetry colours, flooring and benchtop material into consideration.

According to Kate, kitchen tiles are a cost-effective alternative to a splashback made from custom-cut glass or stainless steel. But she warns against being too budget conscious when choosing tiles for the kitchen. "It’s a small area, so don’t scrimp on it," she says. "You don’t want to compromise the mood you’re trying to create."
