When you want a snack, there’s nothing better than a pie. Golden, flaky pastry wrapped around piping hot filling… our mouths are watering even thinking about it. But where do you get the best pie? We took on the noble quest for answers, and here are our top choices for Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart and Canberra.
Sydney
As far as we’re concerned, the scent of fresh bread billowing out Bourke Street Bakery is one of Sydney’s greatest wonders. It’s also one of the friendliest joints in town, staffed by folks that seem genuinely happy to both be there and see you. As for the pies? Well, the beef brisket, red wine and mushroom pie is an absolute treat. Once you’ve had one, we guarantee you’ll be back for more.
Melbourne
Bright, airy and brimming with boutique Melbourne charm, Pure Pie is a lovely spot for a whimsical afternoon bite. As you’ve probably guessed, pies are kind of a big deal here, and the braised beef, Guinness and cheddar option is the fluffy, crumbly jewel in their crown. We recommend you bring a friend along – so you can steal theirs and have seconds.
Brisbane
Pure gourmet goodness is the order of the day at Brisbane’s esteemed Piefection. It’s always tough to choose from the feast of pastries available in this place, but we’d have to say that the curry pie is easily one of the best of its kind. It’s got a real family feel about it too, and all who wander through the pleasantly old-school door awnings are made to feel right at home.
Adelaide
From the rich purple walls to the proudly stuffed trophy case, Orange Spot is a bakery designed to impress. The food here is legendary in Adelaide and beyond, and the whiz team of pastry chefs simply won’t be topped when it comes to soft, flaky perfection. Case in point: the chicken, cheese and bacon pie. Never was such a simple combination so utterly delicious.
Hobart
It might sound like a pair of ‘80s TV cops, but Jackman & McRoss is actually one of Hobart’s premier baking establishments. Ideally placed in beautiful Battery Point, it’s a cosy little triumph of old-fashioned warmth and hospitality. Stroll in, admire the dangling trinkets, and order up a steaming hot scallop and wakame pie. Bliss.
Canberra
Our final stop takes us straight to the capital, where Flute Bakery awaits. This one is known mainly as a sweet bakery, with its range of lamingtons, macarons, croissants and cakes drawing hungry patrons from all across the city. The chicken and leek pie deserves a special mention, however. It’s a hearty, wholesome feast, the likes of which you can’t find just anywhere.
Still not full? We’ve got plenty more pies where they came from.
