What is the difference between a plumber and a gasfitter?
Index
Do you need a plumber, a gas fitter, or both? It can be confusing. Here’s the Yellow Pages guide to the difference between these trades.
Plumber
A qualified plumber who receives his or her license in Australia is qualified as a water plumber, gas fitter, roofer and drainer. Their license will clearly state that they are qualified for plumbing and gasfitting.
Gasfitter
On the other hand, a gas fitter will be licensed to work on gas systems, but is not a licensed plumber.
Gas fitters can look after the installation of cooktops, walls ovens, upright cookers, bayonetted points and gas BBQs. They can also convert BBQs to natural gas.
So if your job involves a specific plumbing, drainage or water-related work, you need to call a plumber. If you need someone who can do both gas-related and water-related work, call a plumber and gasfitter. And finally, if you need someone for the installation of gas ovens, stoves or moving outlets for gas heaters, you need to call a gasfitter.
