7 kids’ school holiday activities that are fun for adults too
School’s out – so get ready to look forward to the break just as much as your kids are. Here are seven epic ideas for school holiday activities you can enjoy with the kids. With all the fun remember that in between taking your kids out to enjoy all the awesome activities listed below it is still a good idea to maintain some level of routine from school so they don’t find it tough when it is time to get back to hitting the books.
1. Rock climbing
Shaking fingers, bruised knees, and that excitement of reaching the top of a route – rock climbing is the perfect school holiday activity.
Climbing gyms all over the country offer kid-friendly routes that are challenging without being too impossible (and ending up with kids in frustrated tears). Plus, the young ones will love to see you climbing up the walls.
Extra points if any of you dress like Spiderman for the occasion.
2. Trampolining
Trampolining has gone from something you admire during the Olympics gymnastics events to a common and fun outing in cities all over Australia.
Head to a trampoline park with your kids for a bounce around and a bit of exercise during the holidays. They’re more than just trampolines too – many of these facilities offer extras like foam zones, trampoline volleyball, 3D dodge ball, and more.
3. Escape rooms
Got a little Sherlock Holmes on your hands? Take them to an escape room and put their powers of puzzling to the test.
The premise is simple. You’ll be locked in a room, and given 30-60 minutes to escape. How? By solving fun clues and puzzles dotted all over the room. There are different themes to try and plenty of intrigue for kids and adults alike.
4. High ropes courses
Get outside and make the most of the start of the warmer months with an adventure course up in the treetops.
High ropes courses get you and your kids walking across tight ropes, zip lining, taking flying foxes, climbing nets, and generally just having a ball high up off the ground. There are levels for all ages and skills so everyone can join in, and plenty of instructors on site to help talk you through each obstacle.
Try the TreeTops course at Wyong Creek in New South Wales, the Hollybank Treetops Adventure in Underwood Tasmania, or find a high ropes course nearer to you.
5. Horse riding
Horse riding teaches the kids about how to act around large animals, and it gets everyone outside for a chance to enjoy the great outdoors.
Whether you’re new to the activity or it’s a favourite pastime, riding schools offer a range of options for all levels. You can try short or long hikes, visit new places, and spend at least some of the school holidays away from digital screens.
6. Go karting
Let those speed demons lose on a safe and child-friendly race track and watch as they don’t stop grinning for days afterwards.
Kids love go karting for the chance to get behind the wheel of their very own speed machine, not to mention the potential for beating their siblings, friends, and parents. There’s no age limit to will enjoy a spin around the track, so why not even bring along the grandparents while you’re at it.
7. Kayaking
The majority of Aussies are lucky enough to live within a stone’s throw of the beach, or at least a river or lake.
There are kayak rental shops all over the place, and you can usually choose whether you’d rather take a tour with a guide, or simply pick up a kayak or two and choose your own adventure. Grab a double-seater and have the younger kids ride with you, and don’t forget your camera.
