What to ask your mechanic? We’ve got the answers
Index
While it would be nice if we could all have as much knowledge about cars and automobile repairs as mechanics, the truth is, a lot of us don’t have a clue. But there is a way to walk out of your local garage knowing that your mechanic is doing a great job of taking care of one of your ride. Just remember to ask these important questions.
1. Which repairs require urgent attention, and which are just recommendations?
A good mechanic will appreciate that you want the best for your vehicle, and might offer suggestions for improving its performance. If you’re like most people and only ever concerned about urgent repairs to ensure your car stays roadworthy, make sure to ask if the recommended works are absolutely necessary. Get them to explain or show you why the works are needed and require urgent attention so you can walk away feeling confident about your decision.
2. What are my options for repairing the problem?
Sometimes, the problem with your vehicle may be repaired in various ways and with a choice of parts. Your mechanic might suggest considering used parts that are still in excellent working order to help you reduce the cost of the overall repair. Other times, it may only be possible to use parts from the vehicle manufacturer which are usually more expensive than reconditioned or used alternatives. You should always ask for all the options for repairing your car before agreeing to the work.
3. What would you do if it was your car?
Turn the question around onto the mechanic. When they provide you with an answer, ask them why they believe that it’s the best option for your vehicle. It never hurts to put them on the spot, and if anything, you’re more likely to get an honest answer. They should still offer you all the options available to fix or service your car but that can sometimes leave you confused. Ask them what they would do if it was their vehicle to help point you in the right direction.
4. Can you provide me with a maintenance plan?
After looking at your vehicle during a recent service or repair, the mechanic should have a good idea of what works may be needed in the near future. Setting up a maintenance plan with a garage is often an excellent solution to prevent any unexpected problems from occurring and keep an eye on any recent major repairs. Ask your mechanic if they can provide you with this service so you can carefully budget for any potential maintenance costs and repairs as and when they arise.
5. Are the parts and service under warranty?
One of the best ways to ensure the mechanic or vehicle repair company you choose has confidence in the quality of their parts and labour is if they offer you a warranty on both. Always ask them what is covered and how long the warranty will last for added peace of mind. After all, you’re spending your hard-earned cash, so make sure it’s covered under warranty in case the worst happens.
6. How much is it going to cost?
It may seem an obvious question to ask, but you’d be surprised how many people leave their car for repairs without finding out the cost first. You’re within your rights to ask for a detailed written quote on all parts and labour before proceeding with any repair works. That way, you’ll have a good idea of what charges are involved in the work for your vehicle, as well as avoid any disagreements on the final cost with your mechanic.
7. What caused the problem?
Not only should you ask your mechanic what initially caused the problem with your car, but you can also get them to show you where the fault is first. Depending on the issue, knowing the cause could help you avoid the same problem in the future, and save you repair costs further down the line.
