How long is a motor vehicle inspection report valid for?
Index
An automotive inspection or vehicle inspection report may be valid for the lifetime of the car or it may need to be renewed annually, depending on the age, condition and type of vehicle.
It also depends on the state or territory you are in, as each state or territory is authorised to independently make laws regarding a car check or vehicle check.
Most places in Australia do not require regular car inspections. There are some exceptions for some of the states or territories (such as vehicles running on LPG or CNG need annual inspections in the ACT, and some commercial and public transport vehicles in WA need annual inspections). Usually, a safety inspection is required only when a car is being sold.
However, if a car is over a certain age, has been modified in some way, or has been written-off and repaired, an inspection is usually required. You should check your state or territory’s laws to make certain.
You may also need to undergo another vehicle inspection if you are issued a Defect Notice from the police, which is a system used in most of the states or territories in Australia.
