Can you claim a massage on private health insurance?
Index
Massage is not only a great way to relax tired muscles. It’s also recognised as a therapeutic treatment by doctors. But what about your private health insurance?
Many health insurance companies offer Extras cover. From orthodonists to optometrists, Extras cover is a great way to add value to the cost of your health insurance – after all, most of us won’t need a hospital on a regular basis, but may need a sports physio, a 6-monthly clean at the dentist, or an annual eye exam. It’s great to get these covered by our private health insurance policies.
Extras Cover extends to many therapies, including physiotherapy, podiatrists, dentists and some alternative therapies, such as massage. These may be fully or partially covered by your health insurance provider.
If you are interested in a particular therapy – dental care for example, or a chiropractor, it’s worth talking to a number of different insurance companies to see what therapies they cover.
However, before you book in for a massage, you’ll need to check a couple of details first. To qualify for private health insurance rebate, the practitioner must be accredited, or registered with a professional organisation. Check with your private health insurance supplier to see what professional masseur organisations they recognise.
Secondly, some health insurance companies only cover services from approved therapists. There will be a list of their preferred suppliers on their website. It’s worth checking to make sure your health insurance will pick up the tab on your next massage.
