Can I have all my locks work with just one key?

Can I have a single key for all my locks?
Whether you’ve just moved into a new home or have old and worn locks, it may be time for an update. Adding new key locks can both update the security of your doors and ensure you are the only one that holds the keys. You will also be able to know for certain how many key copies exist and easily make more if needed.
You may even want to consider investing in a lock system that offers the flexibility of holding a master key. A trained locksmith can assist you in replacing your existing locks and advise on how to stay safe and secure in the future.

Reasons to update your door locks
There are a variety of reasons you may need to hire a locksmith to update your door locks, including:
- Losing your keys
- Moving to a new home
- Loaning a key that is not returned
- Needing to replace locks that are worn, old or damaged
- To gain peace of mind your home is secure
- Going through a separation, divorce or dispute
- After break-ins or attempted break-ins
What is a master key?
A master key is a key that is able to open multiple doors that have been installed under one keying system. For example, in an apartment scenario, while each tenant may have their own individual keys to their unit, a landlord may have a master key that would be able to open any door in case of maintenance requirements or emergencies.
Master keys work because a third pin is added to one or multiple slots by a trained locksmith. Typically, a normal lock only has two pins.

What about my key locks? Do they need to be updated?
Your locks need to be compatible in order to “key them alike”. Take the key from one of the doors and try inserting it into the other locks. Any lock that the key will slide into (although it won’t be able to actually turn unless it is set to that lock) can be changed to match the others that the key will slide into. If the key does not slide into the lock or latch lock then you will need to replace the lock with one that is compatible.
Consider restricted access
If more than one person uses your premises and you want to restrict access to certain areas, e.g. a study or bedroom, then a master key system is an option. For example, you have six locks in the home and your master key fits all. If you have a cleaner, their key can be made to only work in two of the locks, the laundry and the back door, say. Another person has a key that fits only four locks. This way, you control access while having one-key freedom for yourself.

Convenience is key
It’s much easier and more convenient to have one key that fits all your door locks and window locks. As long as you make sure that it’s a solid, well-installed lock, then you should have no more fiddling around your key chain for the right key.
