How much should I pay for turf?
Index
Asking how much you should pay for turf grass can be like asking how long is a piece of string. It all depends on the context. The amount you pay can change according to services rendered and extra gardening or landscape supplies required.
There are two major factors in determining how much your grass lawn will cost: the type of grass and the amount that you are buying. Different types of grass will come at different prices – some higher quality grasses with greater resistances to extreme weather conditions, for example, will cost more than grasses that require more grass care and have low colour retention.
Often turf grass will be priced by the square metre. However, prices often are adjusted for the amount you buy: the larger your grass lawn, the more turf you require and the cheaper it becomes per square metre.
However, there are also other factors to consider. This includes other services rendered: will your turf supplier be simply delivering the turf? Or is laying the turf also included? Will they also prepare the soil for optimal growth before laying it down? Will they provide additional lawn care afterwards? These services may be bundled into the amount you pay.
You will also need to consider not only the price of the turf, but also other supplies you might require. If you need to grade the area, you may need to purchase landscape supplies to do so. You may also need to buy extra topsoil and fertiliser, should your garden not have sufficient nutrients for your turf.
How much you should pay for your turf can be a very complicated question. It is best to get a number of quotes from a variety of different companies for a range of different types of turf in order to get a good comparison.
