How do I know how much turf to order?
Index
Figuring out how much turf grass to order can be a bit of tricky business if you don’t know much about lawn and turf grass care. However, there are some easy ways to find out how much turf you need, even if you don’t know the specifics of gardening.
The first step in finding out how much turf you need is finding out the dimensions of your garden or the area you want to turf. This is simply a matter of physically measuring out the area. Even if you are considering getting artificial lawns made of fake grass, you will need to do this measurement. Ensure that you get your measurement in both the metric system (metres) as well as the imperial system (yards or feet). This is because turf providers and landscape supplies stores could work in either system and you don’t want to have to be doing conversions later.
The next step is that you will need to figure out what kind of turf you want and where you want to get it from. This is a bigger decision than you might think. There are many different types of turf. Some require more lawn care and fertiliser but are more resilient to different temperatures. Some are heat resistant but will go dormant in the winter. There are turf grasses that are designed to withstand drought conditions and others that are wear resistant and have high colour retention.
Of course, this decision must be combined with deciding where to get your turf grass. Different landscape supplies stores and grass lawn providers will be selling different types of turf. It is best, at first, to figure out what kinds of qualities you would like your turf to have, rather than figuring out exactly which particular brand of turf you want. This way, you can be more flexible about which company you buy from, and know what kind of grass you are looking for.
The next step is to find out how turf is sold from the companies you are considering. Do they sell it by the square metre or do they have smaller or larger rolls that you must purchase? Do they offer a customisable size or will you have to divide it up yourself?
Once you know how it is provided, you can then figure out how much you need to buy from them. Most commonly, turf grass providers will offer turf in units of square meters. To determine the size you need, take the length and the width of the area and multiply them together. This gives you the measurement in square metres. If your area is a circle, you will need to measure the diameter of the circle (the distance from one end of the circle to the other) and then half that value (this is the radius of the circle). You then multiply the radius by itself and multiply this by the constant pi. This constant is built into most scientific calculators, but if you have a standard calculator, you can use the number 3.14 to get sufficient accuracy.
More often than not, turf providers will put tools on their websites to help make this process a lot easier for you. Some tools simply calculate the size of your lawn based off your length and width measurements. Some even provide calculations for different shapes including circles and semi circles. Others combine this turf grass tool with other products they offer, so you can determine if you need topsoil, fertiliser, bark or other garden products.
If you are finding any of this difficult, you can go to the nearest grass supplies or landscape supplies store and ask to speak to a customer representative so they can explain the whole thing to you. Alternatively, many turf supplies companies will offer to send someone to inspect your lawn requirements and provide a quote.
