How often to do every single chore around the house

While there are some people who enjoy the rhythmic, zoning out that comes with giving the house a good clean, for a lot of us, it’s not high on our likes list. And then there are those big tasks like cleaning the windows that you know need to be done, but just how often (or little) is acceptable? Does it really matter if dust bunnies build up on the carpet where no one can see them? Will anyone really notice that the oven hasn’t had any TLC in a few months?

So we’ve done some research, taken a poll and talked to a host of professional cleaners to see how long you can reasonably go between major and minor chores and still keep a presentable, happy home.

Weekly chore list

  • Change/clean your sheets
  • Scrub the toilet
  • Vacuum
  • Mop/sweep hardwood floors and tiles
  • Clean the bathroom

Monthly chore list

  • Clean out your fridge
  • Wash your duvet
  • Dust furniture and cabinets

Six monthly chore list

  • Clean your oven
  • Move furniture out from walls to clean under and behind
  • Clean out the freezer
  • Wash your shower curtain
  • Clean the windows

Annual chore list

  • Clean your couches
  • Polish wood furniture
  • Rent a carpet cleaner for a deep clean
  • Clear out wardrobes
  • Clean the fireplace/chimney
  • Clear out gutters

We’re not going to lie to you. Ticking off everything on your chore list is a bit like going to a spin class – not much fun at the time, but it feels pretty awesome once you’re done.

Whether you work through it by rewarding yourself with treats, spread it out over the week so that it never feels like it takes much time, or throw on your favourite ’90s playlist as you tick them off, it’s all about finding a method that works for you.

But let’s be honest, sometimes life gets in the way, and sometimes Netflix is just so much more appealing than identifying and removing that stain on the carpet. In these cases, it’s always nice to remember that professional help is at hand. Even better, professional help is right here.

From window cleaners to home cleaners to gutter cleaners search for cleaning services in Melbourne, Sydney, or anywhere in Australia with just a few clicks and request a quote to be one-step closer to a sparkling clean home (then treat yourself to a vino anyway).
