A freestanding bedroom wardrobe is a great form of storage that can be adapted to your bedroom design and needs – with a wide choice of designs and styles to suit your lifestyle.

If you don’t have a lot of cupboard space or you live in a Victorian cottage whose charms don’t run to built-in robes, don’t despair. Sweden has heard you, and designers are beavering away, coming up with stylish combinations and options for freestanding bedroom wardrobes that will complement any bedroom design and storage needs.

According to furniture retailer Chris Cadzow, new combinations and styles of wardrobe storage systems are regularly launched on the market, but right now glass door panels are the popular choice. "Generally the designs are very contemporary, but in particular there is a new trend in glass doors with aluminium frames," he says. "The glass comes in either green or charcoal grey and the wardrobe can be coordinated with other furniture ranges such as a chest of drawers or shelving system."

Although the glass-door option is only available on sliding-door wardrobes, there are many hinge-door options as well. "Based on what are traditionally the best-selling sizes in wardrobes, the frames come in standard widths of 50cm, 75cm and 100cm and there are two height options of 201cm or 236cm, but everything else is completely adaptable," says Chris.

This means that in addition to designing the amount of hanging space, shelves, solid or wire-frame drawers, baskets and shoe racks, you can also choose the style of door. That is, if you want a door at all. "Some people who have walk-in wardrobes off their bedrooms will go with an open solution," says Chris. "Really, the combinations are endless."

Most freestanding bedroom wardrobe storage options come in a range of coloured or stained finishes to match your bedroom design, and a number of enhancements are available, such as smaller cabinets that stack on top of the wardrobe for extra storage space. If you have high ceilings, these can accommodate items that you don’t need to access on a daily basis. Some wardrobes even come with lighting systems. "You can get hinge doors that trigger a light when opened, or there are small lights on extendable arms that can be attached to the top of the wardrobe frames," says Chris.
