Moving interstate? Stress less with our ultimate relocation checklist

Moving house is never easy. Not only do you still have all the responsibilities of normal life, but you get to add van hire, packing, boxes, address change notifications, boxes, pet transport, more boxes, new school enrolment, and even more boxes into the mix. Moving interstate is trickier still, so here are a few things to keep in mind before setting off.

Organise your utilities and insurance

It’s not the most thrilling of tasks, but it has to be done. You should contact your current utility providers at least a month before you move, and let them know exactly what your plans are (especially if you’ll be reconnecting with the same company at your new home). Don’t forget to pay the final bills, and ensure that any direct debits are cancelled at the right time. Oh, and get your insurance coverage in order. Will it transfer seamlessly over, or will you need to change your plan?

Arrange for movers

There are loads of removal companies out there, so research them all thoroughly before making a choice. Always get a quote on their services and all available options, and make sure they’re equipped to handle any special items you want transported. Decide well in advance what they’ll be taking and what you’ll be taking, as this will save a whole lot of hassle on moving day.

Notify all relevant parties of your new address

Unless you’re entering some kind of witness protection program, it’s probably a good idea to let people know where you’re going. That includes friends, relatives, business associates, club memberships, medical providers, online shopping sites, and anyone else who should be aware of your new address. Remember to set up mail redirects, too.

Pack

This may seem obvious, but there’s a certain art to packing that you should bear in mind to save trouble. Always start a couple of weeks in advance, beginning with the least-used items and working your way from room to room until the big day arrives. Keep track of all your important documents (passports, birth certificates, bank statements and so on), and keep everything you’ll need on moving day readily to hand.

Ensure the car is serviced and can make the drive

The last thing you want is a sudden car breakdown that leaves you stranded halfway between your old and new lives, so please get your vehicle serviced a week or so beforehand. Don’t leave anything to chance, because moving house is definitely one of those occasions where everything that can go wrong tends to do so.

Consider the kids and pets

It’s going to be a long drive, to say the least, so you’ll need to make sure the kids have plenty of entertainment. Older kids will probably spend much of the trip playing games on their phone, but see that they take plenty of breaks to avoid car sickness. As for younger children, a round or two of I Spy, plus any other car games your family loves, will keep them on the right track. Pack plenty of snacks and water, and do everything you can keep your pets comfy and secure throughout the trip.

There’s a lot to keep in mind, but we’re sure you’re on top of it all. If you’re looking for reliable heavy transport specialists, you can find them right here.
