Dressing for success – tips on dressing for an interview
Index
First impressions are always important. In a job interview situation, your appearance and the way you are dressed will carry as much weight as your resume and experience.
It’s always better to over-dress for the interview and lean towards the conservative end of the spectrum than to go under-dressed. This goes for job agency and recruitment agency interviews. Make sure both yourself and your clothes are clean and neat. Body piercings and tattoos are best removed or covered up. Discreet earrings are acceptable. Make sure your pants don’t sit too low, or your skirt is too high, and keep your shirt buttoned.
For women, neutral, solid coloured suits and a smart shirt or blouse underneath is best. Tight, short skirts are not advisable, and opt for a moderately heeled shoe rather than stilettos. Nails should be clean, make-up simple and any jewellery should be tasteful. For men, a dark solid coloured suit with a white shirt is always a winner. A muted tie is also good, and dark shoes and socks to match your suit. Clean shaven or neatly trimmed facial hair is advisable, and neatly groomed hair all round.
