Different types of licenses – car, motorbike, truck
Index
Different types of driving licenses are required for a range of vehicles including cars, motorbikes and trucks. There are many driving schools that provide driving lessons specifically designed around these individual vehicle requirements.
All Australian states and territories have a uniform driving license system covering car, motorbike and a range of rigid vehicle (trucks) classes of license. Most driving schools offer driving instruction enabling drivers to upgrade to a different class of licence as each license requires a unique set of driver skill and experience.
Some drivers are required to hold additional licenses as a condition of employment. Each vehicle class has a different pathway to becoming a fully licensed driver. Specialised driving schools provide driving lessons that cater to each specific vehicle, as a car driving instructor offers lessons very different to a heavy vehicle driving instructor. In addition to specific vehicle tuition, many driving schools provide addition classes in defensive driving, refresher classes and overseas license conversions.
In many instances, truck and taxi licenses are obtained by professional drivers who need a specific license in order to perform their work duties. Some driving instructors will also educate drivers on safety equipment requirements including appropriate headwear and clothing for motorbike riding. License requirements do vary between states and territories in Australia.
