How to choose a chiropractor

Got a pain in your back? You’re not alone. Neck and back pain is a major problem for many Australians, especially those of us who spend long hours at a computer desk each day.
However, if you haven’t been to see a chiropractor before, and your are thinking of making an appointment with one, there are a few things you should take into account first. Here’s our quick guide to choosing the right chiro for you.
First of all, you want a chiropractor who will take a full medical history before starting any treatment. If they just jump straight to adjusting your back, then there’s a problem, so step away! If your chiropractor recommends that you have x-rays prior to treatment, it’s a good sign. It’s a demonstration of their caution, and an understanding that the pain you are experiencing might be the result of something more serious than a misaligned spine.
The second thing to consider is clarity. Look for a chiropractor who explains to you the type of treatment that is going to be performed, its expected outcome, how long it will last and how much it will cost. Be wary of chiropractors who want you to sign a contract for long term care.
And finally, stay away from any chiropractor that advises you to preference your chiropractic treatment above your visits to your GP. A good chiropractor understands the links between all forms of health treatment.
If you have any concerns about the qualifications of a chiropractor, or simply want to make sure they are properly accredited, you can check online with the Chiropractic Board of Australia. Just like finding a good GP, it’s important to find a chiropractor you can trust.
