Cheap and cheerful – our guide to family caravan parks

Caravan and camping holidays have enjoyed a resurgence over the past few years, as more and more young families pack up their car and head off around Australia to enjoy the great outdoors.

Back in the old days a caravan park consisted of a long row of concrete squares to park your rig on, with an amenities block at one end, and a kiosk selling milk, bread and lollies at the other.

Today caravan parks have gone upmarket. For a fraction of the price of a holiday resort, a modern holiday park can offer you a fully inclusive holiday experience, in some of the most beautiful parts of Australia.

While caravan holidays have always been popular with families, today caravan parks offer an amazing range of activities to keep kids occupied. From swimming pools, giant jumping pillows, games rooms, big screen movies and kids clubs to giant chess sets, you can feel confident that your kids will never be bored, whatever the weather.

Some caravan parks even boast water slides, onsite cafes, beauty salons and indoor play centres.

What’s more, the facilities have gone up a notch too. As well as the standard camping and caravan sites, some caravan parks now offer individual ensuites – perfect for families with small children. Most caravan sites will also offer a variety of onsite cabins, ranging from permanent caravan-style cabins to 3 and 4 bedroom villas with spa baths.

While ideal for families with small children, it’s hardly surprising that holiday parks are not as attractive to travellers wanting a quiet getaway close to nature. However, there are still plenty of caravan parks that will appeal to couples and older families. To find these, look out for caravan sites that have limited availability for family sites, and those that use the words “quiet and peaceful” in their advertisements.  If in doubt, call the site directly and talk to the owner/operator to get a feel for the type of clientele they attract.

Choosing the right caravan park for your family can make the difference between a good holiday and a great one. For a full list of kids’ activities and facilities, contact the caravan park directly.
